After the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, a new movement within Judaism began to take shape, in which early Christian believers proclaimed that Jesus had been resurrected and was God’s chosen king (Messiah). This soon spread beyond the borders of Judaism, as the Apostle Paul and others began proclaiming the gospel to the Gentiles as well as the Jews, and local communities of Christians (called “churches”) were formed throughout the Greco-Roman world.
