The Romans conquered Jerusalem in 63 BCE. While the Roman Empire could be ruthless, they largely allowed the Jews to administer their own internal affairs. Jesus’ preaching that kingdom of God was not the kingdom of Rome led to his crucifixion. In 70 CE, Jewish resistance to Rome led to the destruction of the temple.
