    Alexander the Great’s army conquered the Persian Empire and captured Jerusalem in 332 BCE, ending more than two centuries of Persian rule. More Jews lived outside Palestine than ever before, and life revolved around both the temple in Jerusalem and the Torah as a way to maintain Jewish identity even in Diaspora.
