ANALYSIS
Zechariah’s primary task is the rebuilding of the Temple, with the restoration of covenant worship and obedience to the law among the returning Jewish exiles. However, his immediate goal of a rebuilt TempleThe Jerusalem temple, unlike the tabernacle, was a permanent structure, although (like the tabernacle) it was a place of worship and religious activity. On one occasion Jesus felt such activity was unacceptable and, as reported in all four Gospels, drove from the temple those engaged... and a restored Jerusalem broadens into a sweeping final oracle where the God of Israel will be acknowledged as God and king over all the earth. People of all nations will look to Jerusalem as the center of worship.
