Psalm 31:5 – Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit

BIBLE TEXT

Psalm 31:5

SUMMARY

The pray-er can confidently entrust his or her life to God because God is faithful.

ANALYSIS

This verse provided Jesus’ last words from the cross, according to Luke 23:46. Jesus once more shows himself to be in solidarity with his Jewish brothers and sisters who have prayed this prayer over the generations. In Jewish tradition, perhaps already in the New Testament era, these words served as a bedtime prayer. Facing the dangers of the night or even of death, the psalmist and Jesus could confidently give themselves into the care of the faithful God (v. 5) who was their “rock” and their “fortress” (v. 3).
