ANALYSIS
As Jesus begins the Farewell Discourse (14:1), the disciples are troubled by his words about departing from them. ThomasOne of the twelve disciples of Jesus who is remembered for doubting then believing in the resurrection. More pleads for the disciples that Jesus show them the way where he is going. Jesus responds by saying that he himself is the way which they have always known. The image of the way is an important one for Jesus. By speaking of the need for people to go to the Father, he understands that all people are separated from the Father by sin. For people to go to the Father, the barrier created by sin must be overcome. This occurs when Jesus goes the way of crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. He goes the way of the cross in order to become the way of life for others. Through his death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus reveals the truth of the love and life that people receive from God. In many respects, the way is not a direction or a journey, but the already promised abiding with God and with Jesus (14:2).
