Zipporah lived in Midian, the region east of the Red Sea. Her father, who was called Reuel or Jethro, was a priest. Moses came to the region after he murdered an Egyptian and fled. When some men chased Zipporah and her sisters as they attempted to water their flocks, Moses intervened on their behalf and was invited to stay Reuel’s home. Reuel gave Zipporah to him in marriage (Exod 2:16-22), but she did not accompany Moses to Egypt to demand the release of the Hebrew people from slavery. Moses and Zipporah were reunited after the Exodus, when Moses returned to the region with the people.
