Reuben

The eldest son of Jacob and Leah, and forefather of one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Reuben was the first son born to Jacob and Leah. Jacob showed special favor toward Joseph, one of the younger sons, which made the other brothers jealous. When they determined to kill Joseph, Reuben intervened and had him placed in a pit in the hope of saving him later. Without Reuben’s knowledge the brothers sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt. The tribal territory of Reuben was east of the Dead Sea.
