A tax collector who became one of Jesus' 12 disciples
Matthew was a tax collector whom Jesus called to follow him (Matthew 9:9). Other Gospels know him as Levi (Mark 2:14; Luke 5:27). He became one of the twelve disciples. The Gospel of Matthew has traditionally been ascribed to him.
