Martha lived in Bethany and was a friend of Jesus. In Luke 10:38-42, Martha welcomes Jesus to her home but complains when her sister Mary does not help her provide hospitality. In John 11:1-44, Martha appeals to Jesus for help when her brother Lazarus dies, and Jesus responds by telling her, "I am the resurrection and the life."
