Alexander was son and successor of Philip of Macedon. He acceded to the throne in 336 BCE. In the following year, after imposing unity upon Greece, he embarked on the campaigns in which he conquered the Persian Empire and reached India. His conquests diffused Greek culture throughout the ancient Near East, profoundly changing the world in which the Jewish people lived.
