ANALYSIS
Here are some put-downs of laziness, or “sloth” as the older versions put it. Here is a person who will not work because of imagined dangers outside (v. 13); another who won’t get out of bed, revolving like a swinging gateGates are openings in walls or fences for entrance and departure. In the Bible (as in Ruth and the prophets) the city gate was a commercial center where business and social transactions took place. In Amos the gate is the location of the law court... (v. 14); another who is too lazy to feed himself (v. 15); and finally one who has an inflated ego (v. 16). These writers were not without a sense of humor!
