Hebrews 3:1-6 – Greater than Moses

BIBLE TEXT

Hebrews 3:1-6

SUMMARY

Jesus is not just greater than the angels, but greater even than Moses.

ANALYSIS

In chapter 3, the author leaves comments about the angels and the Son’s superiority to them, and begins to talk about Moses. If the angels were revered as messengers of God, Moses was much more important as a messenger. Moses was the one who received God’s word to lead the enslaved Israelites out of the land of Egypt. It was to Moses that God gave the Law in the wilderness. About Moses, God said, “With him I speak face to face” (Numbers 12:8). Moses may hold the highest place of honor among human beings in the Old Testament.

In these verses, the author of Hebrews does not question or limit the honor that belongs to Moses. Yet as great as Moses was, and as favored by God as he was, Jesus has a different, and even more honored place. Moses was a faithful servant, yes. And Jesus is a faithful son.

The word for “house” is used six times in this passage. At points, “house” stands for “Israel”; at other points, it is just a generic building, and once it seems to mean all creation (v. 4). Finally, the author says, “we are his house.” Here as elsewhere, the author enfolds his readers in the story he is telling, not just as observers, but as participants. They are part of Israel’s history, and Israel’s history is a part of them.
