Ezekiel 34 – God, The Good Shepherd

BIBLE TEXT

Ezekiel 34

SUMMARY

An oracle condemning the “shepherds” of Israel and God’s role as a shepherd seeking the lost sheep.

ANALYSIS

Using the imagery of shepherds and sheep, which was a common ancient Near Eastern way to speak of rulers and people, this passage condemns the leadership of Israel who have only served themselves. They have not watched over the poor and weak. So, God will become the shepherd and seek out all the scattered sheep. The nation’s inattentive and exploitative leaders are responsible for the exilic moment in which they find themselves. But God will gather the exiles and feed them like a good shepherd. God will not leave them scattered in exile.
