SUMMARY
No one can fully know the work of God.
ANALYSIS
This is a succinct expression of the limitations of our knowledge about God. The matter stated in the first half of the verse sounds like a very modern debate: When does human life in the womb actually begin? Even the incalculable scientific advances made in the last 2000 years have not solved arguments about how exactly to pinpoint the “beginning of life.” The second half of the verse draws a comparison. Just as we do not understand something like the beginnings of human life in the womb, which is at once both ordinary and miraculous, so also we do not understand the works of God.
