2 Peter 1:3-4 – Everything We Need

2 Peter 1:3-4

The apostles may all have passed from the scene, and the social and political culture surrounding the church may have been taking a more threatening turn, but it is still true that in the apostolic teaching the church has been provided and entrusted with the power and the promises it needs to thrive in faithful witness.

The author moves immediately at the beginning of the letter to direct his readers’ attention to the foundation that has been provided for them already and to how durable this foundation remains, even in the face of threats and corruption. This might be read as an indirect reminder of the inheritance received from the apostles.
