Zelophehad

Zelophehad is an Israelite, belonging to the tribe of Manasseh, who dies during the forty-year wilderness wandering. He had five daughters — Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah — and no sons. In Numbers 27:1-11, his daughters petition Moses to be given their father’s inheritance. Moses brings their request to God, who not only agrees that their father’s inheritance should pass on to them, but that this will be a new law for Israel moving forward. In Numbers 36:1-12, the law is amended to clarify daughters must marry within the tribe of their father.
