Jezebel was the wife of Ahab the king of Israel, (869-850 B.C.) She encouraged the worship of Baal and Astarte, bringing hundreds of its priests and prophets from her native Tyre and ruthlessly persecuting the prophets of God. Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel, but fled from Jezebel’s wrath. He also condemned Jezebel and Ahab for killing Naboth in order to seize his vineyard. In the end, the house of Ahab was destroyed in Jehu’s rebellion. Jezebel was flung from her high palace window and eaten by dogs.
