While Jacob was living near Shechem, his daughter Dinah went to visit some of the neighboring women. A young man took notice of her and forced himself on her. Then with the help of his father he sought to marry her. Dinah’s brothers were indignant and before they would agree to the marriage insisted that all the local men be circumcised. While the men were still in pain from circumcision, Dinah’s brothers (Simeon and Levi) attacked and killed them. Jacob disapproved and denounced their retribution.
