Apollos was a Jewish Christian from Alexandria who was well-versed in the Scriptures and known for his eloquent speech. When he came to Ephesus, he spoke boldly about Jesus but was acquainted only with the baptism practiced by John the Baptist. Paul’s companions Priscilla and Aquila gave him further instruction in the faith (Acts 18:24-28). Apollos later went to Corinth, where Paul had established a congregation. In time, the Corinthian congregation broke into factions, some identifying with Paul, some with Apollos, and others with Cephas (Peter). After Apollos rejoined Paul in Ephesus, Paul wrote the letter known as 1 Corinthians, which makes occasional mention of Apollos.
