John 21:1-19 – The Fourth Resurrection Appearance

BIBLE TEXT

John 21:1-19

SUMMARY

John 21:1-19 narrates the last resurrection appearance in John’s Gospel where Jesus shows up on the shores of the Sea of Galilee as his disciples have returned to their day job of fishing.

ANALYSIS

The disciples have been fishing all night without any success. When Jesus appears, he suggests that the disciples try the right side of the boat which results in a haul of fish that they can barely drag to the shore. It is in this moment of abundance that the disciples recognize Jesus, bringing to mind “grace upon grace” and Jesus’ miraculous signs. The details of abundance recall those of the wedding at Cana – large fish, hauling and dragging, and the detail of the number of fish, 153. The number of fish does not have to be metaphorical as some commentators suggest. Rather, the specific number is meant to emphasize the abundance. This final resurrection appearance promises that the disciples will still recognize Jesus’ presence in the promise of abundance. It is also another occasion for Jesus to host a meal for his disciples, once again feeding them, like the five thousand, with bread and fish. In many respects, it is a second calling for the disciples. The last time we heard about Nathanial was at the first calling of the disciples. After the resurrection, the disciples need to be called again to the mission Jesus has for them.
