Proverbs 25:3, 11-14, 18-20, 25-26, 28; 26:1-2, 7-11, 17-19 – Similitudes

BIBLE TEXT

Proverbs 25:3, 11-14, 18-20, 25-26, 28; 26:1-2, 7-11, 17-19

SUMMARY

Here are a number of proverbs that contain a plentitude of similitudes.

ANALYSIS

Proverbs 25-26 (more Proverbs of Solomon) boast an abundance of similitudes which invite the reader to consider how one thing is like another. (See “Similes/ Similitudes” entry in Introductory Issues in Proverbs).

They are rather like riddles: How is a fitly spoken word like jewelry? How is a gift not given like clouds without rain? How is singing a cheery song to one in pain like vinegar on a wound? How is good news from afar like water to one who thirsts? How is a fool who reverts to his folly like a dog who returns to his vomit? How is someone who meddles like one who takes a passing dog by its ears?
